Wendy McCallum (00:02.661)
Hello everyone, welcome back to the Coaching Edge podcast. I'm your host, Wendy McCallum, and I have a special guest with me today. Coach Christy Osborne is here. Hi Christy.
Christy (00:11.182)
Hey Wendy, how are you? Glad to be here.
Wendy McCallum (00:13.349)
I'm great. Glad to have you back. So Christy has been here for some, a couple of other episodes on the Coaching Edge. Christy is, full disclosure, one of my favorite people and coaches. And we have a couple of small, intimate group coaching programs that we run together. We co -coach. Christy is based in London, UK. And we discovered a couple of years ago that we have...
an overlap in terms of the audience that we serve, the women that we serve, and decided to partner on at first kind of a backend membership. And if you don't know what a backend membership is, there's an episode of The Coaching Edge where I talk about backend memberships. I'm not sure if it will have published by the time this one comes out, but I think so. So you can go back and look for that. It's basically just a membership that, or a group that gets formed from alumni one -on -one clients. So for me, it's women that I've worked with.
privately and Christie has worked with privately and we put them together in a support group post the one -on -one coaching. And so we have, we had a group that we started that was a backend membership group together. And then we launched a another group program called finding freedom, which is an intimate group coaching setting for women who are trying to change their relationship with alcohol. And we've been running that together for a while.
And so I invited Christy here today to talk about AI because Christy also is one of my coaches in the BBB. So she's a member coach. She started as a member of the business building bootcamp and now actually helps us and hosts the tech and socials call, which happens once a month in the BBB for the member coaches. And it's an opportunity for them to ask any question to Christy who really is an expert on all things sort of tech, social media.
and AI, which is what we're going to be talking about today. And so our coaches get to come to that call and ask whatever they want about how to use all of these platforms and get out of overwhelm around sort of like how to start and what they actually need and what they don't need, that kind of thing. So thanks again, Kristy, for coming in today.
Christy (02:21.998)
Yeah, of course. I'm so excited to be here and this is gonna be a fun one.
Wendy McCallum (02:26.149)
Before we get started, I thought I never remember to do this when you're on, but I thought it would be a good opportunity to just ask you a little bit for those people who are listening, the coaches who have been following this podcast and have heard me talk about the BBB a little bit. I don't talk about it too much, but the business building bootcamp, which was my one year course for newer coaches. So that's coaches in the first three years of their business. And then it has a continuing membership option for coaches after that, that program you have been in really since the inception. And I would love it if you would just share with people, you know,
from the horse's mouth instead of from me, the founder of the program, what you like about it and how your experience has been in it.
Christy (03:06.19)
Yeah, I mean, when I was first starting my coaching practice, I didn't have any sort of sense of community and I didn't have anywhere to bring like problems and issues in real time. And so, you know, before we got to know each other really well, like I knew that you were a very successful coach and the fact that like you hold these invaluable office hours where people, including myself, can bring any sort of...
issue that they're dealing with, whether it's like very big picture where they see their coaching practice going or very tiny, like what hashtags to use. Like we were able to go over those in office hours. And I just remember even if I hadn't brought anything myself, learning from you coach others in the group and having, you know, taking away something literally from every single office hour. So,
I mean, even now it's invaluable, but in the beginning it was super invaluable. Um, and you know, obviously you have this massive library of, of information and the podcasting module, for example, was super helpful. I printed out all those, all those resources when I was launching my podcast. And, um, and so it's just, it's been, it's been really, really great. I mean, I always talk about my favorite lesson, which I think is your free, you know, your, your main, um,
kind of lesson that you so generously give away now is the pricing masterclass. And that is how I figured out not just how much, how I wanted to price, but how much I wanted to work because hello, we're all in this industry, right? So that we can have some flexibility and I have two kids at home. So that was invaluable. And I mean, I could talk about this all day, but I think we're talking about AI. So I'll stop.
Wendy McCallum (04:51.525)
Yeah, I don't want to talk about it all day. I don't want to talk about it all day, but I did want to get your thoughts on it because I know you've been a really great supporter of the BBB and I appreciate you. And it's been so great to have you in the program. And you're such a great example of a success story of a coach who started out feeling really, I think, shaky about where she was going and how she was going to turn this into a going concern. And you're now at this place in your business where you're charging really, really good rates for what you do. Your practice is busy. You've built this really quite incredible
group program. In fact, we have two group programs together. You've launched a podcast. So Christie has a podcast called, okay, you have to say what it's called because the name I always I'm going to mess it up. What's it called?
Christy (05:29.87)
It's called, but Jesus drank wine and other stories that kept us stuck. And so if you are a Christian galler, have ever said that to yourself, because the people that have said that to themselves, get it.
Wendy McCallum (05:43.045)
Yeah, for sure. It's a great podcast. So she's been doing that now for a while with another coach, Mead Shirley. And she has a book coming out, which is so freaking exciting with, what's your publisher?
Christy (05:59.182)
So it's Waterbrook. It's the Christian imprint of Penguin Random House. So it's really exciting. Yeah.
Wendy McCallum (06:03.333)
I mean, that's so, so, so, so crazy. I love to celebrate. We'll have Christie back on when that book comes out to talk about book launching a book as a coach about what she coaches around, which is what this book is about. Cause I just think that's just so exciting. And I love to see the, as the coach of the head coach of the BBB, just to be able to see the progress that you've made over the last couple of years in the program and to be along for the ride is just so exciting for me as your coach. So that's awesome.
So we're going to talk about AI today and how to use AI as a coach. And we're not going to get into the weeds on this because AI is just generally overwhelming for most people. In fact, we talk about it a lot in the BBB because a lot of coaches are experimenting with it and trying to figure out how to use it in their businesses. And there are many coaches who are just resistant to even trying it because the idea of using an AI platform to help them in their business feels pretty scary.
and kind of freaky and I get it. But the truth is AI is here to stay. And it's kind of one of those like, if you can't beat them, you got to join them things and we can't beat it. It's not going anywhere and everyone's using it. And so the question becomes, okay, how can we introduce new coaches to AI and give them some really practical ways that they can start using AI in their own businesses to help.
Christy (07:00.46)
Mm -hmm.
Christy (07:10.19)
Mm -hmm. Yeah.
Wendy McCallum (07:29.381)
to help them to make things more efficient, to save them time, to increase the quality of the content that they're putting out there and to help them prevent the burnout that's so common in the first couple of years of building a business. So, Kristy and I have a list of the ways that we use AI and we're just gonna kind of talk through those now. And we're gonna keep this one, you know, short as always, this episode will be no more than a half an hour. And so we've got about 22 minutes to go through the V.
different ways that we use AI. So first of all, Christy, like, what is AI and what is the main platform that most people are using when it comes to accessing AI?
Christy (08:05.686)
Mm -hmm.
Christy (08:12.174)
Yeah, so AI is artificial intelligence. I heard someone say, you know, everyone's running around saying that AI is going to take our jobs, but in reality, it's not AI is going to take our jobs, but the person that uses AI is going to take your job, right? Because it is such an invaluable tool. The main platform is ChatGPT. I always say ChatGBT, but it's definitely ChatGPT.
Um, and it, there is a free version and there is a paid version. Um, and it is super, super invaluable for basically what you end up doing. And we'll talk through it though, is asking a prompt. So asking a question and giving the robot, so to speak, a task, right. Of something that it's going to then give you in return and we'll talk through prompts, but the most important thing is just as specific as you can get.
With that prompt, the better your results will be.
Wendy McCallum (09:10.789)
Yeah, and it's really a learning curve like so many pieces of building a business are. This is a learning curve. So go easy on yourself in the beginning. Have some fun with it. Experiment with it. You're probably going to have some major flops in terms of asking questions and not getting a response that's remotely helpful. And then you're going to try some other things and they're going to be really, really good and really helpful. And I would say this is a great place to spend some time doing research on great prompts for, you know, spend some time on the internet looking for those because all of these, you know,
prompts, you don't have to reinvent the wheel here. These prompts have now there've been enough people using AI that we have some really good prompts that you can just copy and paste and sort of change the details of. And you're going to find that those are probably a lot more helpful for you. So, for example, in the BBB, we have a module on this and where it, Christie and I actually keep a running spreadsheet together that we share with the BBB members that's constantly growing where we're incorporating like our favorite prompts that we are using in our businesses. We're going to talk through.
in a more general way today, the types of prompts we use. But if you're looking for specific prompts, then doing a Google search for a particular type of prompt is probably gonna give you some language that you can start working with. Okay, Kristy, let's get into it. What are some of the main ways that we use this? I wanna start with niche statements, because this is like, if you're a new coach,
One of the things you have to do right out of the gate is get clear on what it is you do. You need to know who you serve, what the problem is that you help that group with, and how you solve that problem, and hopefully how you solve it in a unique way. So what your kind of special sauce is. You wanna be able to say, I'm so -and -so, I'm a coach for X, this group of people. I help them do blank, and this is how I help them do that.
And most of the new coaches in the BBB really struggle with that. And I know that I struggled with that. And by the way, I want to be clear, I've said this in other episodes, your niche is going to change over time. So this is not something that's like set in stone once you get this, but you do need to know how to clearly articulate who it is you help with what and how you do it. Because if you can't do that, you're not going to be able to attract clients. People need to be able to land on your website or see your posts on social media and know that you're the right person for them.
Christy (11:11.5)
Mm -hmm.
Wendy McCallum (11:32.261)
or you're the wrong person for them, but you want them to have clarity on that. And so I have been using this as a really helpful tool as the head coach of the BBB to help my BBB members get clear on their niche statement and really articulate that in a way that's really easy to understand and also kind of interesting and catchy. And so...
What you might wanna do there is come up with that statement. If you already have that statement loosely, it should be on your website somewhere. It should be something that you know. If you don't, that's okay. You can go back to a previous podcast episode where I talk about niche and avatar. But once you have a sense of that statement, input that into chat GPT, ask chat GPT to make that 10 times better. Or if you want the tone to be different on it, if it feels really formal to you, you can say, make this 10 times better.
and use a more conversational, playful tone. And that's like just a really simple prompt that will help you to get a revised version of that thing. Have you ever used it for that kind of thing, Kristi? Yeah.
Christy (12:27.692)
Mm -hmm.
Christy (12:34.606)
Yeah.
Oh yeah, definitely. And one of my favorite things that, so it's important to note here, I think if you're just working on an Asian avatar to keep them all within the same window in Chappie GBT, because then it's going to build on each other, right? And so what my kind of like, I just keep inputting things and keep inputting things in the same window. And we've basically personified my avatar, given her a name. Her name is Vicki Harrington. And so now when I want to,
learn more about what Vicki Harrington's pain points are for this week, I go to that particular window and basically say like, what's Vicki Harrington having for breakfast this morning? And what is she thinking about? And you can literally ask it all of these questions. And the more you build on it, the more that it will spit out for you, which is amazing. And the other things that you can do, like to your point of ask it to do it, you know, in a different playful, more playful tone. One of the things that I love to do is,
is take someone and it's gotta be someone that's relatively famous enough that like the robot's gonna know. But what I do a lot is because I love the uplifting and kind of encouraging voice of Jenna Kutcher. Like I often say, write that again in Jenna Kutcher's voice. Or if you were running Jenna Kutcher's social media and writing all of her Instagram captions, write it in that tone of voice. And then it will completely change and it normally nails it as long as the person is big enough and has a big enough online presence.
Wendy McCallum (13:50.405)
Yes.
Wendy McCallum (14:04.389)
Yeah, interestingly, I was listening to Amy Porterfield talk about AI the other day, and she was saying that she gets her team actually does write this in Amy Porterfield's voice because she's so famous. And I guess at a certain point, if you get so famous and you have enough content out there, you can actually ask it to write it in your voice using your full name, which is cool. Let's hope we all get there someday.
Christy (14:12.942)
Hahaha!
Wendy McCallum (14:26.757)
And the other thing I think it's important to say right up front with this, and this is my cardinal rule on AI and Christie's cardinal rule, and I say this all the time, over and over again to my students in the BBB is you want to make sure that you never use it just as the robot spits it out. You have to read it, you have to tweak it, you have to proof it, you have to make sure it makes sense, it doesn't sound robotic, you have to also make sure that it sounds like you.
And a lot of the time it will not, it will sound very formal and very robotic, in which case you can do a couple of things. You can edit it yourself, which I do recommend, so you can go in there and play around with it, or you can ask it to write it again, but again, using a different tone and you have to specify the tone, make this less formal, make this more playful, make this, you know, write, or you can also say, write this again, as though you're speaking to X and be really detailed about who the,
person of the demographic is that they're speaking to and that will change it as well. So, and when Christie's talking about different windows in chat GPT, I think she's really just talking about, it's almost like different chat threads. And you'll see when you go in and experiment, just get the free version of chat GPT. You don't need the paid one to start. Get the free version and go in and start playing around with this. And you'll see that when you ask it a question the first time, it starts a chat thread and you can go back to that chat thread and ask another question. And so,
Christy (15:26.03)
Yeah.
Wendy McCallum (15:49.637)
What I do and what Christy does is we just keep our chat threads as kind of different topics. And then we go back and ask if we have another question around that same topic, then we go back and ask the question there so that the robot has the benefit of the previous work that it's done and knowledge that it's gathered from that. Okay, yeah.
Christy (16:07.022)
Yeah.
Can I just jump in and say something really quick that I've learned is really helpful. And this sounds like it's extra work, but it's not. So have the robot do its thing. Like what I do is copy and paste that then into a separate like word doc or something. I fiddle with it. I put it like it was, you know, I like something I would actually send out. And then I copy that and I put it back in chat, chibit. And I say, okay, make this 10 times better. And then often what it spits out is like, okay, now we're.
Wendy McCallum (16:38.181)
Yeah, it's definitely an iterative process. And the way to make this work the best for you is to be using a combination of the robot and you and your own really great brain and just go back and forth. Okay, another thing that this is really, really great for is course outlines. And this is something that a lot of my students in the BBB are using. I know that I'm just right now at the end of a beta.
Christy (16:38.222)
Now we're getting somewhere. Yeah.
Christy (16:48.238)
Yeah. Yeah.
Christy (16:57.998)
Mm -hmm.
Wendy McCallum (17:05.733)
of a new course that I'm going to be offering called the Coaching Course Creator. And the 15 students in there have also been using ChatGPT as a helpful tool. So I think, you know, probably going to serve you a whole lot better to be doing the brainstorming work and have a general sense of, I you first need to know very, very clearly what the problem is that you're solving and for who with this particular course, what the starting place is for participants in this course and what the ending place is, where you're going to get them to.
and as much as you can fill in the information in between there in terms of the milestones, but then you can input that into chat GPT and say, create from this, this is what I want to achieve in this course, create an eight module course outline with four specific lessons per module and provide me with one to two paragraphs of detail about what each lesson will include or talk about for each lesson. And,
experimenting with that, you're gonna find that you get some really great outlines for courses too. Now, I always change them. My courses never look anything like what chat GPT spits out, but it is so much easier to not be starting from a blank page. Just so much easier for people. So for course outlines, I find it to be really, really helpful. You were gonna talk about using it for, I think we started talking about this in GoF on a Tangent, show notes. That's why I asked you about your podcast, I think. So.
You actually said to me, I don't know, about a year ago, you were like, Wendy, you got to start using it for show notes because I was still writing show notes based on my summary of the podcast episodes. And I started experimenting with using it and realized, oh my gosh, this is so much easier. So how do you use it for show notes? And then what do you do? Because I know that you take that content and use it for more things.
Christy (18:51.458)
Mm -hmm.
Wendy McCallum (18:59.653)
So what Christie's about to talk about, by the way, if you don't have a podcast, that's totally cool, most people don't. But so what Christie's gonna talk about is also how you can take one piece of content and repurpose it into a bunch of other content using the example of a podcast and show notes.
Christy (19:15.758)
Yeah, yeah, so this is so, so great. When I found this out, I was like, hooray! Because nobody wants to take a podcast that you maybe did a week ago and then figure out what you tried to say and then write a paragraph summarizing it. It's just a nightmare. So what you can do is kind of one of two things. I'll go through the podcast thing quickly, because as you said, not everyone has a podcast, but you can take the transcript of...
the podcast and you can copy and paste it into chat GPT. Sometimes you have to split it up into a couple of different like entries, but, and then you can say, write me podcast show notes. Now you need to make sure that you specify a little bit about what the podcast is about, but not only what will it spit you out a summary, but it will also, it can give you the time markers of things too, which is great. And it can give you takeaways and all of those things.
Now, right now we're recording in a platform called Riverside, which is also now uses AI to give you show notes, a summary. All of these summaries again, as we've said a million times have to be then taken and tweaked and looked at and written rewritten kind of in your own voice, but it is so great for that. So what I do literally every Monday morning is I take my show notes from chat GBT and I say to chat GBT, make this my weekly newsletter.
Wendy McCallum (20:22.469)
Yeah. Yeah.
Christy (20:37.038)
um, in newsletter, like kind of lingo language voice. And it gives me then a newsletter, which then I obviously tweak and I send out. And then I take that copy and I say, make this an Instagram caption. And then it, and I love it. And like, I love that it adds emojis for you. Sometimes they're so fun. Sometimes they don't work land, but like, I love that part. It can, it will also give you, unless you tell it not to give you hashtags, it will also offer hashtags, which is amazing. So you can basically take one piece of content.
and repurpose it into all of the things that you need to do. You can also then take that newsletter or Instagram copy and say, make this a carousel, Instagram for example, and carousels are where there's multiple posts within the static grid, not the reels, not the videos. And so it can just basically take...
one piece of content and literally splice it up a million different ways. You can also then say, make this a LinkedIn post because as I've recently found out, there is a proper format for LinkedIn. It needs to be very spaced out. And so, yeah, it's just so, so great for repurposing. And really quickly back to like the newsletter thing, I found it so helpful then to also, because if we think about newsletters,
And one of the most important thing of your newsletter is always your subject line. I always ask Chatchibi to give me 10 options for my subject line. And then I normally take one and tweak it and use it. That was a lot.
Wendy McCallum (22:08.451)
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah. And that's great. No, no, that's okay. That leads right into the next thing I wanted to talk about. One of the ways that I use AI all the time is to help me generate really interesting subject lines for newsletters like you were just talking about, but also titles or names for things. And I know a lot of the coaches, again, a lot of the coaches that I support in the BBB use this as a way to come up with like cool names for programs or offers that they have.
And you can ask it to generate 10 really interesting names for it. You know, you dump in your summary of the program and then you'd ask it to create 10 really interesting names. And then if you don't like them, you can say, create, can you generate 10 more, please? Can you generate 10 more, please? 10 more, please, but not as, but not as silly. I've said that before in there, like, cause sometimes it'll come up with kind of silly things and you can just keep going until you get something. And like, I often, again, I don't use the exact thing that chat DBT gives me almost ever.
Christy (22:54.636)
Yeah.
Wendy McCallum (23:05.413)
but I will tweak those and it'll just give me some really great ideas. So I love it for that. I love it for creating titles and getting names for programs and new offers. And the other thing that I've like touched on, but I wanna make sure I go back to is that I think one of my favorite things about ChatGPT is the make it better function, which you and I have talked about a little bit here, but like the idea that you already have some copy created for something.
or you already have a course outline, or you already have a niche statement, or you already have an Instagram post, and you put it into chat GPT and you say, take this and make it 10 times better, or take this and write it as though you are the copywriter for Amy Porterfield or whatever. And you can then take that piece of content that you've already created and make it tighter, make it cleaner, make it more articulate, and most importantly, have it speak to your audience better, which is the whole.
Christy (23:34.572)
Mm -hmm.
Christy (23:44.782)
Mm -hmm.
Christy (24:02.542)
Mm -hmm. Mm -hmm.
Wendy McCallum (24:03.365)
whole point. So I love it for the make it better thing. And then I guess maybe social, let's just talk generally about social media ideas. So ideas for blogs, social media posts, you want to talk about that for a second? How would you use it for that?
Christy (24:16.974)
Yeah, sure. Yeah, so I do this in a number of different ways. Sometimes I go in and I know the general topic that I want to have a post on. You know, I coach around alcohol. So let's say it's, for example, like health, you know, new health risks or health risks about drinking, right? I wanna do a post on this. You can then ask it to give you several different options.
and write the captions, it's also super, super good because carousels are one of the best ways to boost engagement. And so if you wanna take a subject and break it into like six or seven or eight slides, it does that so well. So you can say, here's my subject, health risks of alcohol, make me an eight slide carousel. And it will give you what to put on the actual tile and it will give you what to put in the caption, which is amazing. Then you can also,
use the same thing to be like, okay, now give me an option of making that carousel a reel. What would you do? And it will literally give you, it's not going to obviously make you a video, but it will say, you know, person talking to camera about X, Y, Z, or, and it will give you options of what you personally can film. So it's really, really good for that for ideas. And then also making them into the different styles of, and this goes for,
TikTok and Facebook and all of that stuff. Like you can ask it to, I wanna write, I wanna film a TikTok. I wanna write a Facebook post and it can give you the various ideas and what to say and how to break it down. And you can just keep playing on that.
Wendy McCallum (25:57.605)
Yeah, I love that. Again, that episode I was listening to on Amy Porterfield over there talking about AI, she said that her team member who does her social media or a portion of her social media said that what normally was taking her five days now takes her two days with AI. So it's such a great tool for efficiency. It just helps you, it helps generate ideas and it also helps you create the content from those ideas in a much more efficient way. So I really love that.
Christy (26:11.436)
Mm -hmm.
Wendy McCallum (26:23.717)
The last thing I want to touch on, because I know this probably feels like a lot to people who are listening. So if you're out there and you're a new coach, I get it. We just wanted to give you a taste of some of the ways that you can start experimenting with AI. Just pick one or two of these things that we talked about today and experiment with AI. Get yourself a free chat GPT account. Or if you already have one, go in there and start a thread on these. But the last thing that I use chat GPT for, um,
often is to help me come up with marketing and promotional ideas. And so I will use it. I will go in and I will say, hey, it's, you know, it's December. I'm looking to generate some more revenue because December is a notoriously low month for coaches for income. It's before January. Everybody's spending all their money on Christmas stuff. And so what can I do to create?
Christy (27:00.268)
Mm -hmm.
Wendy McCallum (27:13.221)
some more revenue, some creative ways to offer some new programming. It could be seasonal specific, like season specific, but I will put a prompt in there and ask it that question. And it will spit out a bunch of really great ideas for different creative ways that I could actually be offering my services right now. Little packages I could put together, promos, that kind of thing. So I love it for that, for helping me come up with creative marketing ideas. Yeah.
Christy (27:40.59)
Mm -hmm. Yeah, I love that so much.
Wendy McCallum (27:43.397)
Yeah, so basically the lesson in this little episode is it is such a wildly helpful tool. And if you're like, I was, if you like a year ago, Christie can testify to this because I would say it was like a year, 18 months ago. I was like, oh my gosh, I don't know if I can do that. I'm Gen X. I felt like this is just too much for me.
Christy (27:57.282)
Yeah.
Wendy McCallum (28:06.117)
I was like, it's so great, Kristy, that you're doing this, but I don't know if I can handle that. That thing's going to drive me crazy. I'm a, you know, I was an English major. I'm a fiction writer. I was like, I believe in my own ability to write words, but the truth is everyone's using it. It makes it so much easier. And I am still doing my own writing. I'm not letting AI write for me. I still do all my own writing and I don't, I do not use it ever in fiction, in my fiction stuff. But for,
business purposes, it really is an invaluable tool and it's worth experimenting with. So we just want to encourage you to go out there and try it. And we would love to know, I'd love to know if you go out and try it, what you think about it. And you can always DM me, my DMs are always open at Wendy McCallum Coach. I love chatting with new coaches. So send me a message there and let me know what you think. And we will be back. I will be back. Kristy and I are actually gonna record another episode now so you can look forward to that one.
but I will be back in another couple of weeks with another episode of The Coaching Edge. Thanks for listening, everyone. Hi, Kristi, thank you.

Thanks.
